This week over at Ten Paces the topical theme of "When I Grow Up" wash dished out to the masses. As always everyone did a real smash up job! If you're looking for a way to get yourself motivated to draw (like I was), you might just try and get in on the fun!

My piece, based on sketch given by Anna Santaguida is about something I remember very well as a kid growing up. Getting your hair braided and the pain that goes along with that. You squirm and you tear up and they call you "tender headed". It's kind of one of those memories that isn't the most pleasant, but it is very special in a way... My angle is kind of like "when I grow up, I'm probably gonna cause some other little girl the same kind of torture that was inflicted upon me for the sake of being adorable."

I went to visit this kid last weekend, very good friend of mine. I went to an event that she planned out, and that I ended up doing the poster for. I did it in a very short amount of time, so it could have been better. But it was fun to do. :)

There were many other fun happenings, socializing, raving, the things that kids my age still tend to do from time to time. all in all a wonderful little adventure. One of the more inspiring ones.

You know that thing I like to do where I take old crappy drawings I did several years ago and try to draw them better? Well here's some more of that.. :)

Turn it into something better produced, ala this:
I don't quite remember the assignment... but I don't remember why I put them in panels in the original. I think the narrative had to do with affair and the idea of who the bad guy was. Gee.... I'm glad I got better at drawing things. :P If I ever decide to go back and actually draw this instead of doodling it, I think I'll give her much more hair. :)

I think I am going to experiment with flash over the summer and maybe try to start the makings of a 15 min. short.... which will take forever since it took me about 2 weeks and a LOT of sleepless nights to finish almost a min. OK. So every now and then I like to take old concepts and try my hand at redrawing them with my current skill level. I think I've explained that. What you might not know is that I used to draw a TON of crappy fan art, like most people who illustrate my generation.

One of my most favorite series to draw was Sailor Moon.... And I loved Sailor Moon most of all.... Maybe a bit TOO much.

I decided at some point to do some mildly erotic art based on a lesser known character interaction. See, in the final season of Sailor Moon, Usagi (Serena) kind of almost cheats on her beloved Prince with a transgender sailor scout by the name of Sailor Star Fighter of the new Sailor Starlight infantry. For one reason or another, only when in Sailor form are they female. When in civilian mode, they happen to be popular pop musician guys.

So in a valiant attempt to garner as many deviantArt views as humanly possible, I created this abomination...

I know... it's pretty bad. (both concept wise and execution... Just silly).

That was in 2007. (which is a bit inexcusable but I'd recently been on a re-discovering Sailor Moon kick). NOW, in 2010 I've done it again. I didn't change anything about the concept or the composition really, just the craftsmanship.

(I really love the derpy face I gave Darien... )

My concept overall was basically, as I remember it, "Why can't Serena just have both?! She's a freaking Queen!". + Trashy romance novel.

So inevitably I'll go through my portfolio and find old things that I really like but feel like I can do a better job at now. This is one of those works. Straight forward illustration I did for Illustration 1 class. It was, at the time, one of the best things I'd done in that class. That was in 2007. I've grown a lot since then.

Today I decided to employ some of my new dry brushing technique to try and fix one of the things that bothered me most about this drawing, the wolf. And I gotta say I dig the results.

I think this is one of those pieces I'll eventually redraw all together, but for now, it's just really fun to see the contrast in my skill over the past few years.

Like every good artist knows, it's all about the business... cards that is! That said, I've just recently acquired my second series of personal business cards for promotion. :) My design this time is a ferret tribute, because let's face it, they're darn cute!

So here's my original design front and back.

And here's the fabulous printed version courtesy of Overnightprints.com. I got the digital prints but when I get more money I think I'll splurge and get offset prints. Also, ROUND CORNERS. Yes.

A new card design.

Which lead me into using brush and ink.... which got me into a groove. :)

I've been messing around with learning how to control a brush now... I decided to use a really difficult brush to start out with and then when I get really good with that, I should be AMAZING with a good brush.... I assume. Either way, it's been fun. Very relaxing. :)

Makin' Earrings!

Something I don't do too often is make jewelry... but every now and then I get it in me to be a crafty bastard. I made these bad boys after finding a pair on Etsy similar that I really wanted...

....but really didn't want to spend $80 on. That sort of thing happens to me now more than ever, the whole "well I can just make that" mentality. So I did! And I'm as surprised with the result as a pregnant nun! And I did it all for under $20! TAKE THAT CONSUMER MARKET!

These bad boys are made of fancy feathers I got from Michael's... not from the craft feather section, no. From the floral arrangements section because apparently that's the only way to buy really nice feathers from Michael's. The feathers are Pheasant, rooster and some kind of marabou... Topped of with some nice Ribbon and beads, attached to fancy silver earring thingies.

That said, I'm considering making more and selling them at a slight markup of around $40 because they took a very long time to make well. :D

Ok. So. I've always been somewhat obsessed with pokemon. Even as a 21 year old, I still find myself excited about the next handheld game. (Pokemon Heart Gold ALL THE WAY!). Every now and then I am stricken with the desire to draw the cute little bastards.

I've been exploring line-less art for a while now, but I think I've finally come to the point where I've found my style with it. And to better illustrate that point, I bring you the one, the only water based turtle squirrel, Squirtle ! (who is also coincidentally the character that I am in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue team rescue, hence the blue bandanna)
I did a charmander and pikachu as well in this style, but I don't really like them as much as this little guy. I'm thinking of maybe undertaking the challenge of drawing if not all, most of the pokemon from the original 150 series. Let the pokegames begin!!

Finals are finally winding down which allows me a bit of time to start thinking about updates. This is something I did in my sketchbook that I thought was pretty fun. It's a self portrait or something like it. I liked it a lot.... I also drew it when I was on my 28th hour of being awake. Being sleep deprived is totally worth it.... sometimes.

So, I decided that these little long necked fellas are Giramaeer (Jee-rah-mah-ear)TM. A delightful blend of llama, giraffe and deer. Their necks are infinitely long and their hearts are infinitely big. They are an all loving, peacful grass eating mamal, with the male posessing an impressive rack. The female has dainty horns and a slightly less fantastic adornment of pattern. In short, they are fantastically fun to draw. In long... well.. in long they are all that stuff before the short. :)

It's done with a sepia Fiber Castel marker, watercolor and acrylic on wood. The picture is dastardly bad though...

Fashion on the Fly

Alrighty so this is a set that I've been working on for my Fashion Illustration class that I figured I'd share with you all because it turned out right awesome (in my opinion, of course).

The name of the game was to pick a location and a set of clothes to match it. I Originally picked New Orleans but somehow ended up focusing more on the aesthetic of N.O. hotels specifically.... mostly cause I love patterns and such. :D And most of the fashion I chose is from Just Cavalli's newest ready ware collection... which I like a whole bunch.

Pup n' Class

This is the first one I completed. The composition for this one is different than the rest (Sort of.. I'll get to that later.) I added a poodle in there simply because it always amuses me when people bring their worthless lil yippers along with them on vacation... seems like a big hassle to me for some reason.

A pixie premadonna in a bright pink dress! This was one of my personal favorite outfits all together. Pretty Miss is waiting for the elevator so that she can hurry up and get on with her life!

Now, there was supposed to be a forth piece to this set... there still is really. Problem was while doing these I felt like the last one in the set did not mach the other three... so I plan on re-working that one and posting it as soon as I finish it. Also, it was landscape so it would have fit the theme I was going for with image sizes better... oh well. Soon, soon!

So part two of the concept piece I did last week is now complete and I gotta say I had a lot of fun with it. He's made of Super Sculpy (far better than Regular Sculpy... not as soft.) finished with acrylic paints and a few real things (the bandanna, hand painted, and the earrings) Expect more of this stuff in the future! Maybe a pandacorn??
